Chapter 24

Syrna?

Syrna! Answer me! Where are you?

Repeatedly Mariam reached for her friend through the darkness. Silence answered her each.

Where is she? Frantically, she ran until her legs burned and she was out of breath. Where am I?

A sudden shift in the air filled the empty void she’d been trapped in with heavy grunts and familiar moans. Gradually, Mariam felt her consciousness stir, and when she finally came to, she found herself in a pit of hedonism. Shocked into silence, she sat up to get a better look at the sexually explicit acts happening around her. Everywhere she turned, there were writhing and gyrating bodies in various stages of rapture. Claws, fangs, tails, and other twisted appendages groped and grabbed at their partners’ flesh. Without remorse, the creatures fucked each other with engorged genitals, serpent tongues, and mouths in unholy areas that drew blood and tainted the air with a foul stench that threatened to gag Mariam.

The worst of it all, she quickly realized, was that she was in the center of the debauchery and several hungry black gazes were locked onto her.

Dry heaving, Mariam tried to close her eyes and tune out the noises. It was impossible. The vulgar moans and growls echoed louder in her head, the more she tried to ignore them. And then there was the smell. God help her, the stench of the fornicating beasts around her almost caused her to black out. The offensive aroma was a horrifying mix of shit, disease-infested wounds, and decay.

Despite her best efforts, Mariam vomited. On all fours, she purged the contents of her stomach. Not once, but twice. When she was finished, her head pounded, and there wasn’t a nerve in her body that didn’t demand she collapse.

Mariam refused.

She’d rather die than fall face first into a pool of her own warm vomit. Instead, she staggered to her feet, slightly surprised that—other than heated stares—none of the demons made a move towards her. Grateful for small favors, Mariam once again closed her eyes, this time focusing twice as hard to gather her thoughts.

In through the nose. She took slow and steady breaths. Out through the mouth. She could practically taste the nastiness of the air on her tongue. Keep calm. She repeated her deep breathing several times. When she felt like she could take more than three steps without fainting, she opened her eyes. This time Mariam paid no attention to the happenings around her. Her only focus was finding a way out of whatever Hell she’d ended up in. Glancing around, she realized she wasn’t trapped in a room like she instinctively assumed.

A pit. A deep one judging by the high circular stone walls towing over her. Luckily for her, there was a double-wide stone staircase that would help her make her escape. Mariam didn’t think twice as she made her way towards the stairs. She crept past the entangled bodies, careful not to step on any random limbs and draw more unwanted attention to herself. She reached the bottom of the steps without incident.
